Mountaineers and Camels Face Off in Thursday Night Showdown

West Virginia will host Campbell on Thursday night, continuing its intensive schedule of three games over five days. This encounter will take place at Hope Coliseum in Morgantown. The Camels face a challenging start to the season after suffering a significant 96-54 loss to the 24th-ranked Wisconsin Badgers on Monday.

Campbell’s New Leadership

New head coach John Andrzejek is at the helm of Campbell this season. Previously an assistant on the national champion Florida Gators under Todd Golden, Andrzejek is celebrated as one of the youngest coaches in college basketball. This year, he turns 32 on Saturday.

Andrzejek’s coaching staff includes Joseph Yesufu, a recent graduate from West Virginia. The Camels will seek inspiration from the Gators’ successful strategies, emphasizing size, rebounding, and skilled guards. In their season opener, Campbell’s senior guard D.J. Smith led the team with 23 points. Smith, a transfer from Robert Morris, represents one of seven players added from the transfer portal, each having previously averaged at least nine points per game at the Division I level.

Campbell’s Roster Overview

  • Senior Guard: D.J. Smith (6-foot)
  • Senior Guard: Jeremiah Johnson (6-foot-4, transfer from Green Bay)
  • Senior Guard: Cam Gregory (6-foot-5)
  • Senior Guard: Muneer Newton (6-foot-5, transfer from Delaware State)
  • Sophomore Forward: Dovydas Butka (6-foot-9, transfer from Pepperdine)

West Virginia’s Season Opener

West Virginia started its season with a solid 70-54 victory against Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday night. Jasper Floyd and Brenen Lorient were instrumental in this win, with Floyd scoring a career-high 25 points and Lorient achieving a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Under the guidance of new head coach Ross Hodge, the Mountaineers aim to build on this initial success.

Game Highlights

  • West Virginia forced 20 turnovers from Mount St. Mary’s.
  • The team capitalized on 25 fouls to attempt 35 free throws.
  • Key contributors included Honor Huff with 16 points and freshman DJ Thomas with seven points off the bench.

West Virginia will compete without two transfers—Chance Moore and Jackson Fields—due to NCAA transfer regulations and recovery from injury, respectively. Coach Hodge noted that adapting to foul trouble prompted unusual lineup combinations, but he remains confident in the team’s potential to improve and adapt.
