Atlanta United Reappoints Gerardo Martino as Manager

Gerardo Martino has been reappointed as the manager of Atlanta United, a team he previously led to an MLS Cup victory in 2018. His new contract extends through the 2027 MLS season, marking his return after seven years.

The club announced Martino’s hiring on Thursday. He expressed gratitude to club owner Arthur Blank and chief soccer officer Chris Henderson for the opportunity to return to a city with cherished memories. Martino acknowledged that this new role presents different challenges compared to his first term but emphasized his commitment to forming a competitive team that resonates with Atlanta United’s fans.

Challenges Ahead for Martino

Martino’s task is significant. He replaces Ronny Deila, who was let go after one disappointing season, where the team earned a franchise-low 28 points. In that season, Atlanta United struggled offensively, scoring only 38 goals while allowing 63.

  • 2016 Season: 70 goals scored, 40 goals allowed, 55 points
  • 2017 Season: 70 goals scored, 44 goals allowed, 69 points
  • Martino’s Overall Record with Atlanta United: 36 wins, 16 losses, 16 draws

Martino’s previous tenure was marked by a high-scoring, energetic style. However, the current roster’s performance has drastically fallen short of expectations, necessitating a strategic overhaul.

Key Players and Roster Dynamics

One critical player to watch is Miguel Almirón, who had a disappointing 2025 season with only six goals and seven assists. Almirón had previously flourished under Martino’s guidance. This season, he will need to regain his form to help uplift the team.

Atlanta United currently has three Designated Player slots filled by Almirón, Emmanuel Latte Lath, and Alexey Miranchuk. The team faces challenges in enhancing productivity, as this trio only accounted for 19 goals together in the last season.

Martino’s Tactical Approach

Martino, known for his preference for a 4-3-3 formation, has demonstrated flexibility in his strategies. In 2018, he adapted his tactics to a 5-3-2 formation to enhance the team’s defensive stability, which ultimately led to their first championship.

The team will also need to assess several players with options on contracts, including fullbacks Brooks Lennon and Ronald Hernandez, to ensure they maximize their potential in the upcoming season. Additionally, the retirement of goalkeeper Brad Guzan will create opportunities for the next talent to step up.

Looking Ahead

With Martino back at the helm, expectations are high. “Tata’s teams have a clear identity, and his playing style and leadership align with our club values,” said Henderson. The reappointment of this successful manager is seen as a crucial step towards reestablishing Atlanta United’s competitive stature in Major League Soccer.
