Pat Cummins Optimistic for Gabba in 2025-26 Ashes, Considers Rest

Pat Cummins is optimistic about returning for the second Ashes Test at Gabba in 2025-26, despite facing challenges ahead. The Australian Test captain has been sidelined with a back injury since July. He is currently bowling off a three-quarter run-up as he prepares for his comeback.
Current Progress and Recovery Plans
At 32 years old, Cummins successfully bowled nearly eight overs in practice. He aims to achieve full pace before the first Test. Fortunately, he has reported no significant pain since resuming bowling, indicating a positive trend in his recovery.
While officials remain cautious about his participation in the second Test in Brisbane, Cummins is confident. “The aim is to build our plan towards the second Test,” he said during the cricket launch event. He is optimistic about getting adequate bowling practice in Perth, which will help determine his fitness for upcoming matches.
Challenges Ahead in the Ashes Series
Cummins acknowledges that playing in all remaining Tests will be difficult. An eight-day gap exists between the second and third Tests, but only four-day intervals are scheduled between the third, fourth, and fifth Tests. This tight schedule could put additional strain on bowlers, especially during exhausting match scenarios.
“I’m eager to play as much as I can, but realistically, after delivering a heavy workload, I might need additional rest,” said Cummins. “I’m focused on getting healthy to participate in as many matches as possible.”
Strategic View from the Sidelines
Instead of playing a warm-up match, Cummins plans to join the Australian team in Perth and observe. He believes that being close to the game can offer valuable insights. “I aim to gather information that could be beneficial later in the series,” he explained.
Supporting Team Dynamics
In Cummins’ absence, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood will lead the bowling attack. Scott Boland, fresh off a hat-trick in the West Indies, is poised to maintain his position. Additionally, there are hopes that all-rounder Cameron Green can contribute up to 20 overs in his next Sheffield Shield game. Beau Webster may also join as a second all-rounder to bolster the team’s strength.
The Australian squad is gearing up for a challenging yet promising Ashes Series, with Pat Cummins setting his sights on a strong return at Gabba.
