The Scottish Government has pledged vital funding for various community projects in Shetland. This funding is part of a broader initiative aimed at supporting island communities.
Funding for Community Hostel Refurbishment and Sellafirth Hub Projects
The Shetland Islands Council is set to receive £350,000 for refurbishment efforts at the Janet Courtney Hostel in Lerwick. This funding will help transform the hostel into affordable housing as part of the larger Knab redevelopment project. The hostel is one of the last listed buildings at the former Anderson High School site, which is advancing toward redevelopment.
In addition to the Janet Courtney Hostel funding, the Sellafirth Community Hub project in Yell has been granted nearly £300,000. This financial support comes from the Carbon Neutral Islands Fund and is led by the North Yell Development Council.
Additional Funding for Community Projects
The Shetland area will also benefit from £80,000 directed towards the Scalloway waterfront regeneration project. This funding will enhance local infrastructure and community amenities.
Government Commitment to Island Communities
Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes emphasized the Scottish Government’s commitment to island communities. “Our island communities are bursting with ambition, innovation, and potential,” she stated. The government aims to support local priorities and ensure long-term sustainability through strategic initiatives.
