Janus Films Acquires ‘Carol & Joy,’ Eyes Oscar Bid for Short Doc on Carol Kane

Janus Films has secured the U.S. distribution rights for the documentary short “Carol & Joy.” This film features renowned actress Carol Kane and her 98-year-old mother, Joy. Directed by Nathan Silver, known for his work in “Between the Temples,” this documentary presents a poignant look into their lives.

“Carol & Joy” made its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival in 2025, followed by screenings at several notable events:

  • New York Film Festival
  • Hamptons International Film Festival
  • Woodstock Film Festival

The film also premiered internationally at the Viennale. It is set to debut exclusively on the Criterion Channel on December 1, 2025.

Aspiring for Academy Award Recognition

Janus Films plans to promote “Carol & Joy” as a contender for the Best Documentary Short category at the 2026 Academy Awards. The film captures the daily lives of Kane and her mother, who is a dedicated music teacher and former dancer.

The documentary is filmed in a vérité style using 16mm film, enhancing its intimate atmosphere. The team behind this project aims to mirror the storytelling quality seen in “Between the Temples,” for which Kane received a Spirit Award nomination.
