Purpose of the New MOT Photography Policy
This new policy seeks to deter ‘ghost MOTs’, a fraudulent practice where certificates are issued without an actual vehicle inspection. This measure promotes trust in the MOT process and helps ensure road safety.
Trial Details and Expansion
A previous trial involved 170 MOT testers from 62 garages who used mobile devices to take photographs of vehicles. Due to its success, the DVSA plans to extend this project to include 244 additional garages.

Image Retention and Access
Drivers are not allowed to request copies of the photographs taken during the MOT or ask for them to be deleted. All images will be automatically deleted after 13 months unless retained for legal reasons.
