SECU Foundation Grants Safelight $500,000 for Shelter Expansion

SECU Foundation has provided a significant grant of $500,000 to Safelight, Inc. This funding aims to enhance the domestic violence shelter located in Henderson County, North Carolina. With this support, Safelight will be better equipped to offer essential services to survivors of domestic violence.

Shelter Expansion Details

The expansion will increase the shelter’s capacity. Safelight expects to accommodate an additional 150 individuals each year. This growth is crucial for maintaining a safe environment for those seeking recovery and support.

Programs Offered

All programs at Safelight will continue to be free of charge. The services provided include:

  • Mental health services
  • Medical assistance
  • Legal aid
  • Housing support
  • Employment training

Since its founding in 1984, Safelight has helped over 46,000 survivors transition to violence-free lives.

Community Impact

The grant reflects the dedication of SECU Foundation to community welfare. Chris Ayers, the Chair of the SECU Foundation Board, highlighted the vital role played by Safelight in Henderson County. He noted that their mission aligns with the foundation’s guiding principle, “People Helping People®.”

Lauren Wilkie, CEO of Safelight, expressed her appreciation for the grant. The funding will allow the shelter to expand from 13 to 20 rooms, thereby increasing support for individuals fleeing violence.
