OKC Thunder’s Nikola Topic Battles Testicular Cancer Diagnosis

Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Nikola Topic faces a significant personal challenge following a recent diagnosis of testicular cancer. General Manager Sam Presti made the announcement during a shootaround on Thursday.
Nikola Topic’s Diagnosis and Treatment
Topic underwent a medical procedure at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, at the start of training camp. The procedure was critical in determining the presence of testicular cancer, which was later confirmed through a biopsy.
Presti emphasized the positive outlook for Topic, stating, “He has a tremendous group of oncologists both at OU and MD Anderson.” Testicular cancer is known to be highly treatable among males, but Topic’s treatment plan involves chemotherapy.
Handling the Situation with Strength
Despite his diagnosis, Topic remained committed to his training. Presti noted, “[Topic] didn’t want to make this information public until he had begun the actual treatments, which he has.” He has continued to work out throughout this challenging time.
As for his return to basketball, there is currently no specific timeline. Presti stated that the team is prioritizing Topic’s health above all else and has no expectations for him to return at this moment.
Background and Future Prospects
- Drafted: Topic was selected as the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.
- Initial setback: He missed his rookie season due to a knee injury sustained before the draft.
- Preseason participation: Topic played for the Thunder in the Summer League and once in the preseason before his medical procedure.
Presti described Topic as “remarkable” and praised his maturity and resilience. “He has all the tools that you could ask for to conquer this situation,” he said, highlighting the player’s strength in facing this adversity.
