A Portland coffee shop has successfully raised over $86,000 to assist individuals losing food benefits amid the ongoing government shutdown. Heretic Coffee, located at 5120 S.E. 28th Ave., operates as a nonprofit establishment that trains aspiring baristas and coffee roasters.

Community Support for Food Benefits

Within less than a week, Heretic Coffee initiated a fundraising campaign aimed at providing breakfast for those affected by reductions in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. This initiative gained significant traction through the generosity of community members.

Donation Highlights

According to an Instagram update from the coffee shop on Tuesday morning, a total of $72,159.66 had been raised by 10 a.m. By the afternoon, that amount grew to $86,000, reflecting overwhelming community support. Owner Josh White expressed gratitude for the contributions, noting:

  • “Over two thousand of you have given toward this cause.”
  • “When the system fails us, it’s on everyday people to take care of each other. This, right here, is the proof.”

This successful campaign underscores the importance of community resilience during challenging times. With the government shutdown affecting food assistance programs, initiatives like this highlight the critical role of local businesses in supporting vulnerable populations.
