Bishop Winans Addresses Viral Video of Church Member at Donation Event

A recent viral video has caused a significant misunderstanding surrounding a fundraising event at Perfecting Church in Detroit. The incident involved both the pastor, Bishop Marvin Winans, and congregation member Roberta McCoy, prompting them to clarify the situation publicly.

Bishop Winans Hosts Fundraising Event

On Sunday, Perfecting Church organized a “Day of Giving,” where Bishop Winans invited church members to contribute $1,000. He encouraged participants to help raise an additional $1,000 aimed at completing the new church sanctuary and supporting community initiatives.

During the event, Winans requested that those donating $2,000 or more come forward first, with other members following based on their donation amounts down to as little as $1.62. This structured approach was intended to maintain order amid the large turnout.

Viral Video and Misunderstanding

The situation escalated when McCoy—a long-standing member of the church since 2013—was filmed approaching the front with a donation below $2,000. The footage suggested she was rebuked by Bishop Winans, leading to misconceptions and negative reactions online.

In response to these claims, McCoy clarified, “He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction based on his instructions on how to line up.” She voiced concerns about the backlash she received after the video circulated.

Bishop Winans Addresses the Incident

Bishop Winans elaborated on his actions during the fundraiser, stating that his goal was to keep church members, particularly the elderly, from standing for too long. “I was calling because the whole church was giving… and we didn’t want people standing,” Winans explained. He emphasized that the guidelines he provided were solely for organization and was not intended to single anyone out.

After the incident, McCoy reported that Winans personally apologized to her. She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting the church, noting her consistent donations over the years.

This clarifying statement from both Bishop Winans and Roberta McCoy aims to address the misunderstandings stemming from the viral video. Perfecting Church continues to focus on its mission of community support and engagement.
