Urgent Rehabilitation Needed for Kano-Kari Highway to Ease Commuter Struggles

The Kano-Kari Highway is facing a critical need for rehabilitation, raising concerns among lawmakers. This vital roadway connects key towns across Kano, Jigawa, and Bauchi States, impacting daily commutes and economic activities significantly.
Importance of the Kano-Kari Highway
The Kano-Kari Highway traverses several local government areas, including:
- Wudil
- Garko
- Sumaila
- Takai
- Birnin Kudu (Jigawa State)
- Gwaram (Jigawa State)
- Shira (Bauchi State)
- Giade (Bauchi State)
- Misau (Bauchi State)
This highway plays a crucial role in the transportation of goods and people in Northern Nigeria.
Current Condition and Challenges
On October 28, 2025, lawmakers such as Hon. Yusuf Shitu Galambi and Hon. Yusuf Rabi’u voiced concerns over the highway’s deteriorating state. Despite a comprehensive rehabilitation project approved by the Federal Executive Council in 1999, commuters still encounter significant challenges.
The poor condition of the highway leads to:
- Severe traffic disruptions
- Adverse impacts on local economies
- Decrease in the vibrancy of weekly markets
- Increased criminal activities, including robbery
Impact on Local Communities
Agricultural workers rely on this highway to transport their produce and livestock. As the road deteriorates, their access to markets diminishes, directly affecting their livelihoods.
Call to Action from Lawmakers
The lawmakers have urged the Federal Ministry of Works to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Kano-Kari Highway. They also called on the Ecological Office of the Federation to address specific failed sections of the road in Sara, Jigawa State.
To ensure accountability, the House has tasked the Committees on Legislative Compliance and Works with monitoring progress on this issue. Their aim is to restore this essential infrastructure, enhancing the quality of life for both commuters and residents in the surrounding regions.
