US Urges Citizens to Exit Mali Immediately

The United States has issued a strong advisory urging its citizens to exit Mali immediately. This warning comes as the situation in the country escalates due to the actions of al Qaeda-linked militants.

Fuel Blockade Intensifies Crisis

In early September, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin militants declared a blockade on fuel imports to Mali. Since then, they have targeted fuel convoys attempting to deliver supplies to the capital, Bamako.

  • Fuel blockade announced in September 2023.
  • Convoys under attack by militants.
  • Government suspends classes for two weeks due to fuel shortages.

Security Situation Deteriorates

The U.S. Embassy in Mali has highlighted several factors contributing to the deteriorating security situation. These include:

  • Continuous disruptions in gasoline and diesel supply.
  • Closure of schools and universities nationwide.
  • Ongoing conflicts between the Malian government and terrorist groups.

The embassy emphasized that the unpredictability of security in Bamako is increasing. As a result, it encourages individuals to depart Mali using commercial flights. The Bamako airport remains operational, but overland travel poses significant risks due to potential terrorist attacks.

Advice for U.S. Citizens

U.S. citizens currently in Mali are advised to prepare contingency plans. This preparation may include sheltering in place if necessary. The embassy has noted that it cannot offer assistance to Americans outside the capital city.

On October 27, the State Department authorized the departure of non-emergency government personnel and their family members from Mali, citing escalating safety concerns. The current travel advisory for Mali stands at level 4, indicating that travel to the country is strongly discouraged.
