Wentz Undergoes Season-Ending Surgery

Carson Wentz’s tenure with the Minnesota Vikings has come to an abrupt halt. He will undergo season-ending surgery to address a significant left shoulder injury. Wentz suffered this injury on October 5 while filling in for the injured starter, J.J. McCarthy.

Injury Details and Recovery Timeline

The injury occurred during a game against the Cleveland Browns in London. Wentz was hit hard three times in the first half, and the final hit came from linebacker Carson Schwesinger. Although he briefly left the game, he returned to lead the Vikings to a comeback victory, throwing all nine passes on a crucial drive.

Despite the victory, Wentz’s condition worsened. He played through intense pain during a subsequent game against the Los Angeles Chargers, where he expressed that it may have been the most pain he has felt in a football game. Wentz completed 15 of 27 passes for 144 yards, but he also suffered five sacks and was visibly in distress on the field.

Upcoming Quarterback Plans

Wentz’s surgery means he has officially been placed on injured reserve. His absence leaves the Vikings with undrafted rookie Max Brosmer as the only quarterback available. Earlier this season, free agent Desmond Ridder was briefly on the roster, while Brett Rypien, who served as the team’s No. 3 quarterback last season, is currently part of the Indianapolis Colts’ practice squad.

Vikings’ Quarterback Situation

J.J. McCarthy, the original starter, is expected to return to action in their upcoming game against the Detroit Lions. Wentz was brought in on August 24 to back up McCarthy after the team traded Sam Howell. His time with the Vikings was marked by a historical achievement as he started a game for his sixth different NFL team over six seasons.

  • Carson Wentz: Injured left shoulder, undergoing season-ending surgery.
  • J.J. McCarthy: Expected to return as starting quarterback.
  • Max Brosmer: Only available quarterback on the roster.
  • Desmond Ridder: Former free agent who spent three weeks with the team.
  • Brett Rypien: Waived and currently on the Colts’ practice squad.

Coach Kevin O’Connell emphasized the challenges Wentz faced during a demanding schedule. He noted the difficulties of a short recovery time following Thursday night games. As the Vikings move forward, the focus will shift to preparing McCarthy for returning to the field and addressing the team’s quarterback needs.
