The FAA’s decision came shortly after U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy highlighted the ongoing challenges in the air traffic control system during a news appearance. He noted that the current federal government shutdown has resulted in air traffic controllers working without compensation, which has exacerbated staffing issues.
Increased Sick Calls Among Controllers
Secretary Duffy revealed that the number of controllers reporting sick has surged, adding to the operational stress already faced by the workforce. “Just yesterday, we had 22 staffing triggers, which is among the highest we’ve seen since the shutdown began,” he stated.
