Gardiner Expressway Closed from Spadina to Highway 427 Until Monday
Starting this weekend, the Gardiner Expressway will be closed from Spadina Avenue to Highway 427. This closure, facilitated by the City of Toronto, is set to last until Monday morning, coinciding with the end of the World Series Game 2.
Details of the Closure
The purpose of this complete closure is to carry out necessary maintenance and final preparations. This work aims to ensure the safe reopening of all six lanes of the expressway.
Expected Reopening Times
Depending on weather conditions throughout the weekend, three westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes are anticipated to reopen by approximately 7 a.m. on October 27. This time coincides with the morning rush hour for commuters.
Background on the Gardiner Expressway Repairs
This closure is part of a larger initiative to fully reopen the Gardiner Expressway from Dufferin Street to Strachan Avenue. Notably, this project is ahead of schedule by 18 months.
- December 2016: City council approved the Gardiner Expressway Strategic Rehabilitation Plan.
- 2021: Completion of the first section from Jarvis to Cherry streets.
- Late 2026: Expected completion for ongoing repairs on five bridges between Highway 427 and the Humber River.
Future Developments
As part of the continuing repairs, the city is focusing on bridges over Park Lawn Road, Mimico Creek, Kipling Avenue, and Islington Avenue. These efforts are crucial for the infrastructure, especially as Toronto gears up to host the FIFA World Cup in June.
The city’s strategic approach to these improvements aims to enhance safety and efficiency on one of Toronto’s busiest routes.
