Patriots Promote RB Jennings, S Grant for Sunday’s Game Against Browns

The New England Patriots are preparing for their upcoming home game against the Cleveland Browns by promoting two players from their practice squad: running back Terrell Jennings and safety Richie Grant. This decision, announced on Saturday, is crucial for their game-day strategy.
Player Elevation Details
- Terrell Jennings: This will be Jennings’ third elevation from the practice squad. After this week, he must be signed to the 53-man roster to remain active.
- Richie Grant: Elevated for the first time this week, Grant was signed to the practice squad on October 15. His promotion may indicate uncertainty regarding safety Kyle Dugger’s availability.
Injury Concerns
Kyle Dugger has been dealing with a knee injury since appearing on the injury report last Thursday. As a result, he was limited in practice and is questionable for Sunday’s game. Alongside Dugger, the Patriots’ safety unit is also managing injuries with Jaylinn Hawkins and rookie Craig Woodson. However, Hawkins is expected to return after a two-game absence.
Defensive Depth Challenges
The Patriots have faced several injuries in their secondary. Dugger has been an integral part of the defense, participating in three-safety packages this season and playing a significant role in special teams. Grant will serve as crucial depth in his absence, supported by defensive back Dell Pettus and special-team player Brenden Schooler.
Richie Grant’s Background
Richie Grant, drafted in the second round in 2021, brings valuable experience from his tenure with the Atlanta Falcons. Over four seasons, he started 33 games and contributed significantly on special teams. His college career at Central Florida showcased his playmaking abilities, evidenced by ten interceptions.
Running Back Situation
As for the running back position, Jennings will support Rhamondre Stevenson and rookie TreVeyon Henderson. Jennings has shown potential as a downhill runner, with impactful plays last week, including key carries in the fourth quarter.
Despite facing challenges, the Patriots are focused on solidifying their backfield as they evaluate their depth. Henderson, though talented, has been averaging only 4.3 yards per touch. Given the recent injury to veteran running back Antonio Gibson, the team is considering external options as the NFL trade deadline approaches on November 4.
Game-Day Preparations
To finalize their roster for the game against the Browns, the Patriots must declare seven inactive players. With Grant’s elevation, Dugger is likely to be among those inactive. The team also has G Ceadan Wallace, DT Eric Gregory, and QB Tommy DeVito regularly on the inactive list.
The Patriots will face off against the Browns at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. ET this Sunday.
