49ers’ Purdy, Pearsall Remain Sidelined Against Texans

The San Francisco 49ers are facing key challenges as they prepare for their upcoming game against the Houston Texans. Starting quarterback Brock Purdy is still recovering from a right big toe injury that has sidelined him since Week 4. As a result, backup quarterback Mac Jones will take the helm once again, marking his sixth start of the season.

Injury Updates on Key Players

Brock Purdy’s recovery has been slow and gradual. Despite participating in limited practices throughout the week, he was officially ruled out prior to the game. Coach Kyle Shanahan is optimistic, stating, “It is different dealing with a toe,” while noting that Purdy’s condition is improving.

  • Brock Purdy: Injured toe, out for Texans game
  • Mac Jones: Starting quarterback, sixth start of the season
  • Ricky Pearsall: Misses fourth straight game due to a right knee injury
  • Bryce Huff: Hamstring injury, out
  • Yetur Gross-Matos: Hamstring injury, out
  • Jake Brendel: Hamstring injury, out

Pearsall’s recovery has been slower than anticipated, with Shanahan indicating, “I don’t think it’s a setback. It’s just not going as fast as we wanted.”

Potential Returns

On a more positive note, there are hopes for receiver Brandon Aiyuk’s return. He may begin practicing next week as he recovers from a knee injury sustained last season. Shanahan expressed confidence, saying, “I believe he’s getting a lot closer.”

In addition to Purdy and Pearsall, defensive ends Bryce Huff and Yetur Gross-Matos, along with center Jake Brendel, will miss the game due to various injuries. Both Huff and Brendel are expected to be sidelined for several weeks.

Cornerback Position Updates

In a twist of fortune, the 49ers received encouraging news regarding their cornerbacks. Starters Renardo Green, Upton Stout, and Deommodore Lenoir all managed to participate in practices, with Green and Stout fully cleared before game day. However, Lenoir remains questionable due to limited participation earlier in the week.

Additionally, linebacker Luke Gifford and offensive lineman Spencer Burford are listed as questionable for the Texans matchup. The team has opened a 21-day practice window for Burford as he returns from injured reserve.

As the 49ers navigate their roster challenges, they remain focused on competing effectively against the Texans, hoping for a solid performance despite the absence of key players.
