Southern Baptist Theological Seminary Trustees Reaffirm Mission and Leadership

During a recent autumn meeting held on October 13-14, 2023, the Trustees of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (SBTS) reaffirmed their commitment to the institution’s mission. Their focus remains on training ministers of the Gospel for a faithful life. President R. Albert Mohler, Jr. expressed his gratitude towards the board for their serious and joyful governance. He acknowledged the dedication of the administration, faculty, and staff who embody fidelity and excellence.

Leadership Changes at SBTS

During the meeting, Mohler announced significant leadership transitions. Hershael W. York will conclude his tenure as Dean of the School of Theology at the end of the 2025-26 academic year. His leadership has significantly impacted the school, characterized by his adept guidance and pastoral heart. Mohler confirmed that York will continue as part of the faculty after his sabbatical.

Andrew T. Walker has been appointed as the next Dean of the School of Theology, effective August 1, 2026. Mohler praised Walker as a notable and influential figure in the evangelical community, emphasizing the smooth transition that maintains strength in leadership.

New AI Policy

Mohler introduced a new policy regarding artificial intelligence at SBTS. He framed the policy as a moral stance rather than merely a technical one. The emphasis is on upholding Christian integrity in the digital age. He stated that the commitment of the institution includes encouraging individual learning and intellectual honesty.

Mohler noted, “As Christians, we are dedicated to shaping minds and souls. Technologies like artificial intelligence challenge our intellectual integrity. Our work must reflect our own efforts, maintaining honesty in our academic pursuits.”
