In a remarkable performance, Georgia Tech’s Haynes King and Jy Gilmore received prestigious honors from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). King was named Quarterback of the Week, and Gilmore earned the title of Defensive Back of the Week after their outstanding contributions to the Yellow Jackets’ 27-18 triumph over Duke.
Impressive Performances by King and Gilmore
Haynes King, a redshirt senior from Longview, Texas, showcased his skills with 325 total yards, including 205 passing and 120 rushing. His performance was crucial in the second half, where he accumulated 240 yards and led the team to scores on four consecutive possessions. King finished the game with a 28-yard touchdown run, marking his tenth rushing touchdown of the season.
Jy Gilmore, hailing from Citra, Florida, was a defensive powerhouse, recording 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a half sack. His exceptional play helped limit Duke, a team averaging 36.5 points per game, to just 18 points and a mere 68 rushing yards.
Record-breaking Achievements
- King has now surpassed 6,000 passing yards, becoming only the fifth Yellow Jacket to achieve this milestone in three seasons.
- He also holds the record for the most games with both 100 passing and rushing yards in Georgia Tech history.
- This marks King’s third ACC Quarterback of the Week award this season and sixth in his career.
- Gilmore’s 11 tackles were not only game-leading but also marked his highest tally since joining Georgia Tech from Georgia State.
Looking Ahead
Following their victory, the Yellow Jackets will return home for a crucial ACC matchup against Syracuse on Saturday, October 25. This game is notable for multiple reasons.
- It is Georgia Tech’s Homecoming game.
- The team will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the “Miracle on Techwood Drive” victory over Florida State.
Tickets for the game are available, and fans are encouraged to join the celebration at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field.
Fan Engagement and Future Prospects
The Yellow Jackets have experienced a surge in fan attendance, rising by 24% compared to last season. This resurgence can be attributed to the team’s successful run, currently standing at 7-0, their best start since 1966.
In addition to the excitement on the field, Georgia Tech is also advancing its athletic programs through a significant fundraising initiative named “Full Steam Ahead.” This effort aims to enhance facilities and support various sports programs at the institution.
With heightened engagement from the fanbase, Georgia Tech athletics is on a promising trajectory, poised to compete at the highest levels in collegiate sports.
