Rookie Yesavage to Start Against Snell in Blue Jays’ Game 1

The Toronto Blue Jays have announced that rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage will start Game 1 of the World Series against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers. This marks a significant decision as it will be the first time a rookie has started in Game 1 since 2006.

Trey Yesavage Takes the Mound

Trey Yesavage, 22 years old, was selected in the first round of the 2024 Draft with the 20th overall pick. He made his major league debut on September 15 and has since made six starts. His journey has included stints with the Low-A Dunedin Blue Jays and subsequently rising through the minor leagues to Triple-A Buffalo.

  • Yesavage’s postseason debut was stellar, where he held the Yankees hitless, recording 11 strikeouts.
  • In Game 6 of the AL Championship Series, he limited the Mariners to two runs over 5⅔ innings.

Bichette’s Uncertain Status

Meanwhile, the Blue Jays are contemplating including shortstop Bo Bichette on their roster. Bichette has not played since injuring his left knee during a collision on September 6. Despite significant progress, his status for the series remains uncertain.

  • Bichette attempted to return on October 11 but experienced pain while running the bases.
  • He participated in live pitching and took groundballs, showing improvement.

Manager John Schneider indicated that Bichette could play shortstop, second base, or even serve as a designated hitter, depending on his comfort level and performance during practice.

Game 1 Matchup

Toronto has also decided to rest Kevin Gausman, who pitched in relief during Game 7 of the ALCS. Gausman is expected to start either Game 2 or Game 3 of the series. The Blue Jays’ lineup will face off against Dodgers pitcher Blake Snell, a two-time Cy Young Award winner.

Game Schedule

Game Date Location
Game 1 Oct. 23, 2025 Toronto
Game 2 Oct. 25, 2025 Toronto
Game 3 Oct. 27, 2025 Los Angeles

This World Series appearance is a historic moment for the Blue Jays, as it is their first since 1993. Yesavage’s rookie status and impressive performance under pressure will be pivotal in determining Toronto’s success against a formidable Dodgers lineup filled with renowned players.
