Hermoso Reflects on Emotional Spain Recall: “I Admit I Cried”

Jenni Hermoso has opened up about her emotional return to the Spain national team after a significant hiatus. This reconnect comes under the leadership of new manager Sonia Bermudez. Hermoso, the all-time leading scorer for Spain with 57 goals, last played for the national squad in October 2024. During that match, she made a 15-minute appearance against Canada.

Her absence was marked by a challenging year that included providing testimony in the trial concerning the sexual assault case against former Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) president Luis Rubiales. The incident in question involved Rubiales kissing Hermoso without consent during the celebrations of Spain’s victory in the 2023 World Cup final, an experience that overshadowed the joy of the day.

Emotional Return to the Squad

Despite having participated in all six qualifiers for Euro 2025, Hermoso was not selected for the tournament. However, her recent call-up has reignited her hopes. “I have to admit that I cried,” Hermoso shared with Radio Television Espanola about her selection. “It was a moment that I have waited a long time for and I’ve been working for a long time for.”

Playing for Tigres in Mexico, the 35-year-old sees this opportunity as a reward for her resilience. “To continue at this level and to be able to enjoy football with the national team is the reward for all that work,” she reflected.

Upcoming Challenges

This Friday, Spain will face Sweden in a Women’s Nations League semi-final. Additionally, Mapi Leon, a Barcelona defender who last featured for Spain in 2022, has also been included in the squad.

Bermudez stepped into the managerial role after Montse Tome’s contract was not renewed in August. Hermoso is eager for a fresh start with the national team. “For me, it’s been tireless. I haven’t stopped staying strong,” she acknowledged, recognizing the challenges she has faced. “Maybe at some point in my life, it would have been difficult for me to come back, and I feel very proud of myself.”
