Fighting Tigers Protest Exclusion from Playoffs

The Ironton Fighting Tigers football team is making headlines with their recent protest. They gathered in front of the Ironton School Board office to voice their concerns over being denied a place in the playoffs. This decision was made public after an announcement from the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) was relayed to the team on Thursday.
Protest Against Playoff Exclusion
On Friday morning, players and supporters rallied, expressing their disappointment and frustration. Senior running back and linebacker Zayne Williams stated, “We are out here fighting for our right to be able to play in the state playoffs.” He emphasized the unfairness of the situation, attributing the decision to “individuals that haven’t got what they want in life.”
Support from Parents
The protest saw strong support from parents, including Megan Cockrell, mother of quarterback Kayden Edwards. Cockrell expressed her discontent, saying, “We are here because our boys have been kicked out of the playoffs and they deserve to play.” She highlighted the dedication the team has shown, having worked hard throughout the year to compete in the sport they love.
The catalyst for this protest was the emotional fallout following the announcement of the playoff exclusion. “My son called me last night, hyperventilating, after practice when they were told the news,” Cockrell recounted. The protest was quickly organized on Thursday night after the news broke.
Future Plans for the Protest
Cockrell indicated the group would protest until their voices were heard. “If everything is handled on Friday in a timely manner, it will be our only day for the protest. But if we have to keep coming down here, I sure will,” she said.
OHSAA Response
In response to the outpouring of protest, the Ohio High School Athletic Association has been contacted by local media for clarification regarding the decision. They indicated that more information would be shared later in the day. The Ironton Tribune intends to follow this developing story closely.
