Trump Urges Prosecution of Biden-Era Officials, Targeting Smith and Garland

Former President Donald Trump is calling for prosecutions of several Biden-era Justice Department officials. This is connected to an FBI investigation regarding the fallout from the 2020 election.

Trump Targets Justice Officials

In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump accused four senior officials of misconduct. The names mentioned are:

  • Former Attorney General Merrick Garland
  • FBI Director Christopher Wray
  • Special Counsel Jack Smith
  • Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco

He claimed these officials approved an FBI probe that allegedly included examining the phone records of nine Republican lawmakers. Trump expressed that these officials should face prosecution for what he described as “illegal and highly unethical behavior.” He did not specify any particular crimes they committed.

Background on the FBI Investigation

The scrutiny of phone records emerged from a broader investigation, dubbed Arctic Frost, examining efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Earlier this month, the GOP-controlled Senate Judiciary Committee revealed that the FBI obtained data from eight GOP senators and one representative as part of this investigation.

Documents released by Senator Chuck Grassley, who chairs the judiciary panel, suggested that Garland, Wray, and Monaco approved this investigation’s initiation in spring 2022. Smith was later appointed by Garland to oversee investigations related to Trump.

Reactions to the Claims

Trump’s assertions included claims that these officials had “spied” on lawmakers and recorded their calls. However, the Senate Judiciary Committee clarified that the obtained records did not include call content, only details such as call timing and duration.

Grassley criticized the FBI’s practices surrounding Arctic Frost, describing them as “disturbing and outrageous.” He likened this situation to the Watergate scandal. In contrast, Smith’s legal team defended their actions, stating that they were lawful and consistent with Department of Justice protocols.

Election Fallout and Ongoing Investigations

The phone records in question span several days before and after the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol. Trump pressured lawmakers to refuse certification of Biden’s election victory. Ultimately, Congress certified the results despite the Capitol riot.

In August 2023, Trump faced charges related to attempts to overturn the election results. However, those charges were dropped following his re-election due to an opinion that sitting presidents cannot be federally prosecuted. The ongoing Smith investigation has revealed attempts by Trump to sway lawmakers during the Capitol violence.

Financial Claims Against the Justice Department

Trump’s legal team has requested approximately $230 million from the Justice Department. This claim involves two inquiries: the Trump-Russia investigation and a separate case regarding the alleged mishandling of classified documents. Smith’s team has rejected these claims as baseless.

As tensions heighten, the political landscape remains uncertain, with Trump continuing to call for accountability among officials he views as adversaries.
