Singh, who resided in Yuba City, was arrested following the crash. Reports indicate he was driving under the influence of drugs, although authorities have not disclosed the specific substance involved.

According to eyewitnesses and dashcam footage, Singh was reportedly traveling at high speed before colliding with stopped traffic. This reckless driving initiated the eight-vehicle pile-up, which has drawn significant attention from law enforcement and the community.
Immigration and Licensing Concerns
Singh entered the U.S. illegally from India in 2022, raising questions about his legal status and the validity of his commercial driver’s license. The Department of Homeland Security has issued an immigration arrest detainer against him.
Despite these complications, Singh held a valid commercial driver’s license. The California Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed his eligibility, stating he met federal requirements to obtain it.
State Response
Governor Gavin Newsom’s office clarified that the state does not control the eligibility for commercial driver’s licenses. They asserted that Singh’s legal status was validated by the federal government, which authorized him to work in the U.S. until 2030.
Next Steps in Legal Proceedings
Jashanpreet Singh is scheduled to appear in court on Friday and is currently being held without bail. As investigations continue, the community reflects on the tragic loss of life and the impact on families during this holiday season.
