HBO Max Launches New Feedback System for User Engagement

HBO Max has introduced a new feedback system aimed at enhancing user engagement. Launched on October 22, the system encourages subscribers to express their opinions by selecting “Love,” “Like,” or “Not for Me” for each title. This new feature is the first of its kind on HBO Max and its earlier versions, and it is accessible on select web and mobile devices as well as connected TVs.

How the Feedback System Works

The feedback system allows users to provide direct input, which will inform personalized recommendations. Here’s a brief overview of how each selection impacts content visibility:

  • Love: Titles marked with this option will feature in a personalized section titled “Because You Loved.”
  • Not for Me: These titles will be deprioritized in user recommendations.
  • Like: This option appears to have a minimal effect on content sorting.

The feedback buttons are conveniently located on the content details page and pop up after users finish a movie or series.

Price Increases and Market Trends

Just a day before launching the feedback system, HBO Max increased prices across its subscription tiers. The ad-supported base tier now costs $10.99, up by $1. The standard plan saw a rise of $1.50, bringing it to $18.49, while the premium plan increased by $2, reaching $22.99. Annual plans will also see hikes ranging from $10 to $20.

HBO Max is not alone in raising subscription prices. Earlier this month, Disney increased the prices of its Disney+ offerings. In August, NBCUniversal’s Peacock raised its prices significantly in preparation for the NBA season. Apple also increased Apple TV’s subscription costs by 30% in the same month. Netflix implemented a price rise earlier this year as well.

Market Response and Future Prospects

The rise in subscription prices has also affected stock valuations. HBO’s parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, saw stock shares increase by about 10% following the announcement that they are open to acquisition offers. Company president and CEO David Zaslav noted that the board has received interest from multiple parties.

The strategic introduction of features like the feedback system may help HBO Max strengthen its viewer engagement and attract new subscribers, despite the recent price increases.
