SLC Delays 2025 LPL Edition

The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced significant changes to the schedule of the 2025 Lanka Premier League (LPL). Originally set to take place from November 27 to December 23, the tournament has been postponed. This decision comes as SLC prioritizes preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

SLC’s Rescheduling of the 2025 LPL

SLC emphasized that careful consideration led to this decision. The aim is to ensure that all venues are fully prepared for the World Cup, which is crucial for meeting International Cricket Council (ICC) standards. The 20-team tournament requires venues to be in impeccable condition to host such a significant event.

Impact on Infrastructure Development

In their press release, SLC mentioned the necessity of upgrading and enhancing infrastructure around cricket grounds. The R Premadasa International Stadium in Colombo is among the venues undergoing improvements. Although renovations were temporarily halted during the Women’s World Cup, SLC confirmed that construction would resume immediately after the event.

Potential Changes in the Tournament Structure

  • The LPL will now focus on preparations for the T20 World Cup rather than hosting in late 2025.
  • Discussions are ongoing about adding a sixth team to the league.
  • Past teams included Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Dambulla, and Jaffna.

This year’s LPL had been projected to follow previous seasons, which occurred in July and August. However, with the 2026 T20 World Cup approaching in February, SLC believed rescheduling would better serve their logistical requirements.

Franchise Updates

Another significant development involves the franchise teams. Earlier this year, SLC terminated the Jaffna Kings and Colombo Strikers for failing to meet contractual obligations. As a result, there are currently no franchise owners with a history extending beyond 2024.

SLC is expected to announce new owners for the Jaffna and Colombo franchises in due course. This change reflects ongoing efforts to reshape the league and prepare effectively for the future.
