Celtics Release Trio, Finalize Roster for Season Opener

The Boston Celtics are finalizing their roster as the 2025-26 NBA season approaches. The season officially kicks off on Tuesday. Boston’s first game is against the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Celtics Roster Updates

In preparation for the season, the Celtics have made some significant roster changes. According to the NBA’s transactions log, the team released two players from their training camp. Swingman Aaron Scott and power forward Hason Ward are both now waived.

Additionally, the Celtics re-signed RJ Luis Jr. to an Exhibit 10 deal. However, he was waived shortly afterward. Following these moves, Boston now holds a 17-man roster.

Roster Composition

  • 14 players on the standard roster
  • 3 two-way players
  • Neemias Queta and Jordan Walsh are on partly guaranteed contracts

It is expected that Queta will secure a fully guaranteed contract, while Walsh may need to prove himself further this season.

Financial Considerations

The Celtics are also managing their budget carefully. They remain slightly above the NBA’s luxury tax threshold. This might influence their decision not to sign a 15th player early in the season.

G League Assignments

Scott, Ward, and Luis are set to join the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate. Staying with the team for at least 60 days will make them eligible for contract extensions worth up to $85,300.

Player Profiles

  • Aaron Scott:
    • Height: 6-foot-7
    • Alma Mater: St. John’s
    • 2025 NCAA Tournament: Contributed to the team reaching the second round
  • Hason Ward:
    • Undrafted from Iowa State in 2024
    • Previous Team: Scarborough Shooting Stars (Canada)
    • 2024-25 with Maine: Averaged 8.4 points, 6.8 rebounds over 34 games
  • RJ Luis Jr.:
    • 2025 Big East Player of the Year
    • All-American Second Teamer
    • Collegiate Stats: Averaged 18.2 points, 7.2 rebounds

As the Celtics gear up for the new season, the focus will be on optimizing their roster for success while navigating financial constraints. The upcoming games will be crucial for determining each player’s future with the team.
