Emerging Talent Fuels Run Game Revival

After a hard-fought victory against the Atlanta Falcons, the San Francisco 49ers improved their record to 5-2, positioning themselves second in the conference. Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed reporters on Monday, highlighting the contributions from all team phases in the win at Levi’s® Stadium.

Injury Updates

The 49ers are monitoring several injuries following their recent matchup:

  • CB Renardo Green (toe): Avoided turf toe and will be evaluated throughout the week.
  • OL Jake Brendel (hamstring): Expected to be sidelined for a few weeks.
  • DL Bryce Huff (hamstring): Likely to miss multiple weeks after discomfort late in the game.
  • CB Upton Stout (shoulder) and WR Ricky Pearsall (knee): Further evaluations are set for Wednesday.
  • QB Brock Purdy (toe): Remains week-to-week.
  • DL Yetur Gross-Matos (knee, hamstring): Continuing rehabilitation.
  • OL Spencer Burford: Possible return as his practice window opens.

Young Players Stepping Up

With linebacker Fred Warner out for the season due to an ankle injury, Shanahan commended linebacker Tatum Bethune for taking advantage of his starter reps. Bethune’s preparation translated effectively during the game.

Warner’s leadership remained vital as he supported teammates from the sideline and suite. Shanahan also noted OL Matt Hennessy’s smooth transition to center following Brendel’s injury in the second quarter.

Secondary Showing Growth

The 49ers’ secondary displayed significant improvement against Atlanta’s offense:

  • Safeties Ji’Ayir Brown and Malik Mustapha advanced their performance.
  • Brown participated in every defensive snap, while Mustapha increased his workload to 45 plays.
  • Jason Pinnock received accolades for his adaptability in the “big nickel” role.

When Green went down with a toe injury, Darrell Luter Jr. seized the opportunity. Luter’s impactful presence in the run game stemmed from his standout week in practice, earning him the scout team player of the week award.

Run Game Returns to Form

The 49ers revitalized their identity on the ground, rushing 39 times for 174 yards. Shanahan expressed satisfaction in the team’s physicality and control during the game.

“Every team has a different identity, and we knew this approach would give us the best chance to win,” he stated. “It was reassuring to see the team execute effectively.”

Looking Ahead

Now, the 49ers shift their focus to the upcoming game against the 2-4 Texans, coached by former 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans. The team plans to rest on Tuesday before resuming practice on Wednesday. They will depart for Texas on Friday in preparation for Week 8.
