Online Casino Gains Boost Atlantic Lottery Revenue Slightly

Online casinos have notably influenced the financial performance of the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) for the fiscal year 2024-25. A recent annual report from the ALC revealed a 26.2% increase in net revenue from its iGames segment, rising from $126.1 million in the previous year to $159.2 million.
Significant Growth in Online Casino Sector
Among the different gaming categories, online slots emerged as a standout, achieving a remarkable growth rate of 47.8%. The revenue from online slots increased from $67.8 million to $100.2 million. However, other areas within iGames showed mixed results. While digital instant games remained stable, online table games saw minimal changes, and online bingo experienced a decline.
Factors Contributing to Growth
The report attributed the rise in online casino revenue to several key factors:
- Expanded product selection for players.
- Innovative marketing strategies.
- A full year of casino offerings in Newfoundland and Labrador.
- The launch of over 190 new games on the mobile platform.
These enhancements have boosted player engagement and helped the ALC remain competitive amid challenges from illegal gambling operations.
Overall Financial Performance
The ALC reported a total revenue of $890,863,000 for the fiscal year, representing a 2.1% increase compared to the prior year’s $872,680,000. Net profits also saw a rise of 2.4%, growing from $487,028,000 to $498,769,000. Despite experiencing declines in various sectors, online casinos played a critical role in the overall revenue increase.
Sectors Reporting Declines
Several traditional gaming sectors witnessed downturns, including:
- Retail lottery, down 0.6% from $140.4 million to $139.6 million.
- Destination and Red Shores retail casinos, down 5.2% from $256.5 million to $243.1 million.
- Sports betting, down 11.3% from $14.8 million to $13.2 million.
iLottery was one of the few sectors, aside from online casinos, to report growth, with a 28.7% rise from $90.1 million to $116 million.
Provincial Profit Results
Among the four provinces served by the ALC, three reported increased profits:
- Nova Scotia: Increased from $161.7 million to $165.1 million (up 2.1%).
- New Brunswick: Increased from $151.2 million to $154.6 million (up 2.2%).
- Newfoundland and Labrador: Increased from $147.3 million to $153.1 million (up 4%).
Only Prince Edward Island saw a decrease, with profits falling 3.4% from $26.8 million to $25.9 million.
Commitment to Social Responsibility
The ALC’s commitment to social responsibility remains strong. Despite missing the overall profit budget by $1.3 million, the organization noted an $11.7 million increase in profits compared to the previous year. This focus aims to ensure sustainable returns for its provincial shareholders while promoting healthy gambling practices.
The boost in online casino revenue underscores the growing importance of digital gaming in the Atlantic Lottery’s overall strategy to harness market trends and improve player experiences.
