Vikings to Start Carson Wentz on Thursday

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has confirmed that Carson Wentz will start as quarterback in the upcoming game against the Los Angeles Chargers. This decision comes as J.J. McCarthy continues to recover from a sprained ankle, which has sidelined him for the past four games.

Injury Update on J.J. McCarthy

McCarthy underwent a workout to evaluate his recovery progress. However, O’Connell noted that although the team is encouraged about McCarthy’s improvements, he is not yet ready to return to the field. “If this were a Sunday game, we might have different options,” O’Connell explained, but due to the Thursday matchup, time is limited.

Quarterback Strategy Against the Chargers

With the game scheduled for Thursday, the Vikings must travel from Minneapolis to Los Angeles shortly. O’Connell outlined the quarterback strategy for this game, stating:

  • Carson Wentz will start.
  • Max Brosmer will serve as the backup.
  • J.J. McCarthy will be available in case of an emergency.

O’Connell expressed optimism for McCarthy’s future participation, indicating he hopes to see him back next week.

Carson Wentz’s Performance So Far

Carson Wentz’s recent performances have been noteworthy. Over four starts, he has achieved:

  • 67% completion rate
  • 1,072 passing yards
  • Five touchdowns
  • Four interceptions

In contrast, McCarthy’s early-season statistics include a completion rate of 58.5%, along with 301 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions in the first two weeks of the season.

Looking Ahead

After facing the Chargers, the Vikings will prepare for a more extended break before traveling to Detroit for a crucial matchup against the Lions in Week 9. This additional preparation time may further benefit McCarthy’s recovery.
