MSC Cruises has reached a significant milestone in its decarbonization efforts by utilizing shore power at the Grand Harbour in Valletta, Malta. This achievement involved the connection of two of its vessels—MSC World Europa and Explora II—to shore-side electricity on October 15 and 16, respectively.
Details of the Shore Power Connections
The MSC World Europa, launched in 2022, is the company’s first LNG-powered ship. The Explora II, the inaugural unit for Explora Journeys, was delivered by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in September 2024. The pairing of these vessels marks MSC’s first-ever dual connection to shore power.

Prime Minister of Malta, Robert Abela, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that the shore power system promotes cleaner air and sustainable tourism. He acknowledged MSC’s role in making sustainable practices a model for the Mediterranean region.
Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division, highlighted Malta’s pioneering position as the first Mediterranean port to operationalize shore power. He praised the initiative as a supporting infrastructure for both environmental objectives and cruise tourism enhancement.
Significance of Shore Power
Since the shore power site opened in Valletta in 2024, MSC World Europa became the first ship to utilize it. Collectively, MSC vessels have reportedly spent around three hundred hours connected to shore power there. This usage has effectively eliminated emissions equivalent to half a month’s worth of local emission outputs during port operations.
Fleet and Future Plans
MSC Cruises currently operates a fleet of approximately 25 ships. The company has equipped all new vessels with shore power capabilities since 2017 and is retrofitting older models. Eighteen ships in the fleet are currently outfitted to utilize this technology, with additional installations in progress.
