Patriots Strengthen Roster by Claiming Linebacker Caleb Murphy off Waivers

The New England Patriots have made a significant addition to their roster by claiming linebacker Caleb Murphy off waivers. This move follows Murphy’s release from the Los Angeles Chargers, as reported by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Caleb Murphy Joins the Patriots
This transfer marks Murphy’s third team in three years within the NFL. At 25 years old, the 6-foot-3, 254-pound linebacker brings valuable experience and versatility. Originally entering the league as an undrafted free agent in 2023, Murphy began his NFL career with the Tennessee Titans, who were coached by Mike Vrabel at that time.
Collegiate Background and NFL Journey
Murphy split his college career between Grand Valley State and Ferris State. He played in three games as a rookie with the Titans, primarily contributing on special teams. However, he was released midway through his second season and subsequently signed by the Chargers.
- Played in 14 games total for the Titans and Chargers.
- Appeared in all six games this season before being waived.
- On special teams, he has participated in 118 snaps, recording five tackles and half a sack during his time on the field.
Patriots’ Linebacker Group
Murphy joins an outside linebacker unit that features notable players such as Harold Landry and K’Lavon Chaisson. Other members of the linebacker group include Keion White, Elijah Ponder, and Anfernee Jennings, who serve as rotational depth behind the starters.
Upcoming Matchup
Fresh off a convincing 31-13 victory against the Titans, Caleb Murphy’s former team, the Patriots are poised for their next challenge. In Week 8, they will face off against the Cleveland Browns at Gillette Stadium. This game is set for a 1 p.m. ET kickoff on Sunday.
With this strategic roster move, the Patriots aim to bolster their defense as they continue their pursuit of a successful season.
