Broncos Gala: Bowlens Excluded, Family Responds

Recent celebrations to honor the Denver Broncos’ Super Bowl 50 victory have sparked controversy. The Bronco’s former owner, Pat Bowlen, was remembered, but his family claims they were excluded from the events.

Broncos Gala: Bowlen’s Family Excluded

This weekend marked the 10th anniversary of the Super Bowl 50 champions. The events included a dinner and ceremonies at Empower Field, but none of Bowlen’s seven children were invited. The family expressed disappointment over their exclusion.

Bowlen’s Legacy

  • Pat Bowlen owned the Broncos for over three decades.
  • He led the team to three Super Bowl victories, including Super Bowl 50.
  • Bowlen died in 2019 after battling Alzheimer’s disease.

Two of Bowlen’s daughters, Brittany and Annabel, shared their feelings: “We would have loved to have been part of this weekend’s reunions and events.” They highlighted their pride in their father’s contributions to the team.

Family Background and Alzheimer’s Diagnosis

Pat Bowlen had two children with his first wife, Sally Parker, and five with his second wife, Annabel Bowlen. Annabel Bowlen was also diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2018. As a result, Bowlen’s children represented the family at the weekend events.

The Broncos’ Official Stance

A spokesperson for the Broncos refrained from commenting on the family’s exclusion. They stated that the focus is on honoring players and coaches from Super Bowl 50.

Demaryius Thomas Honored

Former wide receiver Demaryius Thomas, who played primarily during Bowlen’s ownership, was recognized during the event. His name will be unveiled on the stadium facade, and a pillar in the team’s Ring of Fame plaza will commemorate him.

Ownership Changes

In 2022, the Broncos were sold to the Walton-Penner group for a record $4.65 billion. Greg and Carrie Walton Penner oversee team operations and emphasize the importance of former players, coaches, and executives in the Broncos’ future.

Pat Bowlen envisioned that his family would continue to lead the franchise. However, due to internal disputes among his children regarding the controlling stake in the team, the organization passed to new ownership.
