Seniors Applaud N.B.’s Enhanced Vaccine Access

An advocacy group for seniors has released a report highlighting improvements in vaccine access in New Brunswick. The report, published by CanAge, awarded the province a B-plus rating. This rating places New Brunswick in a tie for third with Newfoundland and Labrador and Yukon.

New Brunswick’s Vaccine Accessibility Improvement

Compared to previous years, New Brunswick has made significant strides in vaccine accessibility. Just two years ago, the province received an F rating, consistently ranking low among its peers. In contrast, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island have scored higher this year, achieving A-minus and A-plus, respectively.

Funding and Vaccine Options

  • New Brunswick has begun funding several major vaccines, including:
    • Senior-specific influenza vaccine
    • Pneumonia vaccine
    • RSV vaccine
    • COVID-19 vaccines

Laura Tamblyn-Watts, CEO of CanAge, noted that the introduction of digital vaccine records marks a positive change. This update reduces the need for outdated paper vaccination records.

Challenges Ahead for Shingles Vaccination

Despite the overall improvement, significant gaps remain. New Brunswick is the only province in Atlantic Canada that does not provide coverage for the shingles vaccine. The cost for two doses can reach approximately $300, which poses a financial burden for many seniors, especially those on fixed incomes.

“Imagine couples trying to afford $600 for the shingles vaccine. With rising costs, it’s challenging,” Tamblyn-Watts remarked.

The Importance of Vaccination

Improving vaccine access goes beyond individual health. Vaccinated individuals are less likely to require hospitalization, helping to alleviate pressure on emergency departments. Promoting widespread vaccination is essential, particularly in a region with an aging population like Atlantic Canada.
