Arizona Executes Richard Djerf for 1993 Family Murder of Four

Arizona carried out the execution of Richard Djerf on October 17, 2025. He was pronounced dead at 10:40 a.m. at a prison facility in Florence. Djerf was 55 years old and was executed by lethal injection.

Background of the Case

Djerf was sentenced to death for the brutal murders of four family members in 1993. The victims included Albert Luna Sr., his wife Patricia Luna, and their children Rochelle, 18, and Damien Luna, 5. These individuals were related to Djerf’s roommate, Albert Luna Jr., who he believed had stolen his possessions.

Execution Details

This marked the second execution in Arizona in 2025. Earlier in March, the state executed Aaron Gunches, the first since a hiatus on the death penalty following complications in previous executions.

Djerf’s Final Statements

Before his execution, Djerf stated he did not wish to have his life spared. He expressed hope that his death might provide “some measure of peace.” Djerf’s attorney claimed he suffered from undiagnosed Autism Spectrum Disorder and brain damage at the time of the murders.

Last Meal and Witness Accounts

On the eve of his execution, Djerf requested a double cheeseburger, deep-fried onion rings, and cherry pie. He anticipated his final meal around 5:30 p.m.

At the execution, observers noted that Djerf was “completely compliant.” However, the execution team faced difficulties inserting IVs, which took approximately nine minutes. Witnesses from various media outlets reported that Djerf did not appear to be in pain throughout the process.

Emotional Reactions

  • A total of 18 individuals attended as witnesses including state officials.
  • No family members of the Luna victims were present during the execution.
  • Public responses to the execution reflect ongoing debates about the death penalty.

Arizona continues to scrutinize its approach to capital punishment, balancing justice for victims with the complexities of the legal system. Richard Djerf’s case serves as a critical focal point in these discussions.
