At East Carolina University from 2012 to 2014, Hoffman recorded a 3.27 ERA and struck out 211 batters in 249.2 innings. He underwent Tommy John surgery shortly before the 2014 MLB draft, where he was selected ninth overall by the Toronto Blue Jays.
