Blue Jays Seek Anthony Santander’s Removal from ALCS Roster

The Toronto Blue Jays have received approval from Major League Baseball to remove Anthony Santander from their ALCS roster. This decision followed a review of his injury by Dr. Gary Green, MLB’s Medical Director. Outfielder Joey Loperfido will replace Santander ahead of Thursday’s Game 4.

Impact of Santander’s Injury on the Blue Jays

Santander’s removal is a significant blow to the Blue Jays. He was a late scratch for Game 2 due to back tightness. Although he returned for Game 3 and contributed by scoring after drawing a walk, he was substituted in the fifth inning for defensive reasons. Manager John Schneider confirmed that Santander’s back remains “stiff” and “sore,” leading to his absence in the lineup for Game 4.

Playoff Performance Overview

In the current playoffs, Santander has struggled, hitting 3-for-16, with two RBIs. He has not hit a home run since returning from the injured list in late September. His recent performance has raised concerns, especially considering he previously missed a significant part of the season due to a shoulder injury.

Roster Adjustments Following Santander’s Removal

  • Addison Barger will take over in right field.
  • Ernie Clement is set to move to third base.
  • Isiah Kiner-Falefa will play at second base.
  • Alejandro Kirk will be promoted to the clean-up spot in the batting order.

The situation is compounded by MLB rules, which state that any player removed from a series due to injury cannot return for the following series. Therefore, if the Blue Jays progress to the World Series, Santander will not be available.

Mariners’ Lineup Changes

In response to the shifting dynamics of the series, the Seattle Mariners have also made adjustments. Outfielder Victor Robles moves to the bench, with Leo Rivas stepping in to play second base. Dominic Canzone will take over defensively in right field, while Jorge Polanco will act as the designated hitter. Robles has struggled, batting only 1-for-12 through the first three games.

As the Blue Jays prepare for Game 4, all eyes will be on pitcher Max Scherzer. The game will be broadcast on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ starting at 8:33 p.m. ET / 5:33 p.m. PT.
