Trump Authorizes CIA in Venezuela; Maduro Rejects Regime Change

In a recent military operation near Venezuela’s coast, six individuals lost their lives as a U.S. strike targeted a boat. This action was reportedly based on intelligence indicating that the vessel was involved in drug trafficking and linked to narcoterrorist networks. Notably, U.S. officials have not disclosed the specific drug-trafficking organization (DTO) associated with the boat or the identities of those onboard.
Trump Authorizes CIA Involvement in Venezuela
Following the strike, former President Donald Trump addressed the situation on Truth Social, confirming the U.S. military’s actions. He stated that the strike aimed to combat drug smuggling routes that pose a threat to national security.
Maduro’s Reaction
Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro responded on television, vehemently opposing the concept of regime change. He compared the current threats to previous conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya. Maduro emphasized, “No to CIA-orchestrated coups d’état,” advocating for peace and stability in Venezuela.
- Maduro ordered military drills in the Caracas suburb of Petare.
- These exercises involved military, police, and civilian militias.
In his remarks, Maduro expressed grave concern over the U.S. military’s activities in the Caribbean, which he viewed as aggressive actions against Venezuela. Foreign Minister Yván Gil echoed these sentiments, labeling the U.S. statements as warmongering.
U.S. Military Presence and Strategy
In support of these operations, the Trump administration has deployed eight warships, a nuclear submarine, and fighter jets to the Caribbean region. Officials characterize this military presence as a plan to counter drug trafficking.
Allegations Against Maduro
U.S. officials have implicated Maduro as part of the so-called “Cartel of the Suns,” an organization allegedly comprising high-ranking military figures involved in narcotics. Maduro has denied these accusations, asserting that they are part of a smear campaign.
Mick Mulroy, a former CIA officer, emphasized that covert actions require specific presidential authorization. He suggested that such a directive would signify a considerable escalation in U.S. efforts to combat drug trafficking. His comments hint at the complexity of the situation, comparing it to real-life scenarios reminiscent of the film “Sicario.”
This unfolding conflict between U.S. military actions and Venezuelan government resistance continues to develop in a volatile geopolitical landscape.
