Regina Lawyer and Former Sask. MLA Tony Merchant Passes Away at 81
Tony Merchant, a distinguished lawyer and former Saskatchewan MLA, has passed away at the age of 81. He established Merchant Law Group LLP in 1986 and became a leading class-action lawyer in Canada.
Legacy of Legal Advocacy
Merchant was known for his role in several landmark cases. One of his most significant achievements occurred in 2006 with the Indian Residential School Settlement Agreement. This agreement, valued at $1.9 billion, remains the largest settlement in Canadian history.
His efforts were pivotal in advocating for thousands of former students, leading to negotiations with the federal government and various churches. Doug Richardson, a friend and Liberal Party member, praised Merchant’s contributions, stating, “Probably no lawyer has contributed more to the legal profession.” He noted Merchant’s influence on billing practices and his energetic presence in legal circles.
Political Involvement
- Born in 1944 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan.
- Earned degrees from the University of Regina and the University of Saskatchewan.
- Joined the Saskatchewan bar in 1968.
Merchant was elected as a Liberal MLA for Regina Wascana in 1975, serving one term. He attempted to lead the Liberal Party but lost the leadership race in 1975. Merchant also ran for a federal seat unsuccessfully in 1979 and 1980.
Class-Action Lawsuits Against Corporations
Merchant’s focus later shifted back to law. He spearheaded class-action lawsuits against major corporations, including Loblaws and Home Depot. In recent years, he initiated a class-action lawsuit against Ticketmaster over alleged pricing practices.
Courageous Advocacy
Richardson recounted Merchant’s tenacity in pursuing justice for residential school survivors. “He was a force to be reckoned with,” he said, recalling how Merchant never hesitated to challenge opposition. His determination ensured the success of their cause in the residential school settlement.
Acknowledgments and Awards
Throughout his illustrious career, Merchant received numerous accolades. These included:
- Queen’s Decoration
- Queen’s Golden Jubilee Decoration
- Saskatchewan Centennial Medal
- Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal
- Named a Queen’s Counsel in 1995
Merchant’s gentle nature was often overshadowed by his fierce advocacy. His big heart for people and animals balanced his formidable legal presence.
