Bus Drivers and STM Operators Announce Imminent Strike

The union representing bus drivers and operators at the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) has announced an imminent strike. This announcement was made public through advertising panels. The president of Local 1983 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), Frédéric Therrien, stated that the decision to strike is driven by employer actions rather than a whim.

Reasons for the Imminent Strike

The union is currently pursuing alternative forms of protest, including the use of stickers and delaying the return of some buses at the end of the day. According to a press release, the STM continues to push for concessions in negotiations, intensifying frustration among union members.

Previous Voting and Support for Action

On May 30, a significant 99% of the union members voted in favor of potential pressure tactics, which could include a general strike. This overwhelming support reflects the members’ readiness to escalate their actions if necessary.

Ongoing Negotiations

The union has expressed its intent to continue discussions with STM in the coming days. The situation remains fluid as both parties navigate the negotiation process.

Recent Strike History

  • Two strikes by maintenance staff at STM have occurred since the beginning of 2025.

This series of developments highlights the growing tensions between STM employees and management. As negotiations progress, stakeholders will be closely monitoring the situation.
