Mail Delivery Resumes at Canada Post, But Delays Expected

Canada Post has resumed mail delivery as of Tuesday, following a series of rotating strikes by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW). However, delays in service are expected in many areas.

Resumption of Services Amid Strikes

Postal workers returned to their posts across the nation on Saturday, except for specific locations that continue to participate in the rotating strikes. As of now, customers can post letters and packages, with commercial clients able to drop off mail for delivery starting Wednesday.

Current Strike Locations

As of October 14, limited strike actions are affecting specific cities. Notably, the ongoing strikes include:

  • Dawson Creek, British Columbia
  • Fort St. John, British Columbia
  • St. Anthony, Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Timmins, Ontario (affected over the weekend)

Canada Post has indicated that mail and packages will not be collected or delivered in areas where strikes are occurring. Once strikes conclude in any given location, regular operations will resume as quickly as possible.

Impact on Service Reliability

Due to the rotating nature of the strikes, Canada Post cannot guarantee timely mail delivery throughout the duration of these actions. The company explained that interruptions to its integrated national network create significant challenges in maintaining reliable service.

Ongoing Negotiations

Canada Post is currently awaiting an official response from workers regarding comprehensive offers put forth on October 3. The union has criticized these latest proposals, claiming they are nearly identical to those previously rejected by members.

Additionally, the CUPW has raised concerns about political interference in the negotiation process, which they believe has hindered their efforts. A follow-up meeting with the minister responsible for Canada Post, Joël Lightbound, is scheduled for this week, after previous talks transitioned from a general strike to a rotating one.

For ongoing updates regarding strike locations and service interruptions, customers are encouraged to check Canada Post’s dedicated webpage and the union’s social media channels.
