Gorton and Hughes Secure Multiyear Contracts with Canadiens

Jeff Gorton and Kent Hughes have both secured multiyear contracts with the Montreal Canadiens, ensuring their continued involvement with the team. This announcement was made on Tuesday, highlighting the Canadiens’ confidence in their leadership.

Leadership Changes at the Canadiens

Gorton, 57, was initially hired on November 28, 2021, taking on the role of president of hockey operations after previously serving as executive vice president. Hughes, 55, joined the organization on January 18, 2022, and will stay on as general manager.

Commitment to Success

Geoff Molson, the owner of the Canadiens, expressed satisfaction in a statement regarding the extensions for both executives. He noted, “I am very pleased that Jeff and Kent have committed to the Montreal Canadiens for an additional five years.” Molson acknowledged their efforts in enhancing the team’s talent and structure since they arrived.

Rebuilding the Team

Since joining the Canadiens, Gorton and Hughes have focused on rebuilding the team through strategic NHL Draft selections. Key picks include:

  • Juraj Slafkovsky – 2022 NHL Draft, No. 1
  • Lane Hutson – 2022, No. 62
  • Ivan Demidov – 2024 NHL Draft, No. 5

Additionally, they have secured long-term contracts for these promising players, alongside Cole Caufield, drafted in 2019 at No. 15.

Recent Contracts and Achievements

Lane Hutson recently signed a notable eight-year, $70.8 million contract, averaging $8.85 million annually. He was recognized for his outstanding performance, winning the Calder Trophy as the NHL’s rookie of the year last season.

Structural Enhancements

Under Gorton’s guidance, the Canadiens’ hockey operations have undergone significant structural changes. He established the franchise’s first analytics department and expanded the hockey development sector.

Notable personnel changes include:
