B.C. Premier and Ministers Update on SFU Medical School Progress

B.C. Premier David Eby recently announced significant progress regarding the new Simon Fraser University (SFU) School of Medicine in Surrey. This institution marks a historic development as it will be the first new medical school established in Western Canada in over fifty years.

SFU School of Medicine Accepting Applications

The SFU School of Medicine is now open for applications, following anticipation of receiving accreditation by late September. Upon securing preliminary accreditation, the school can initiate its first admissions cycle.

Key Dates and Timeline

  • August 2024: Start of the first academic year for accepted students.
  • Spring 2026: Interviews for prospective students will occur.
  • 2030: Completion of a dedicated permanent facility for the medical school.

At a recent media event, Eby addressed aspiring medical students, highlighting that classes are set to commence in August 2024. Initially, students will utilize interim facilities as the permanent campus is developed.

Aiming for Local Impact

Jessie Sunner, the Minister of Postsecondary Education and Future Skills, noted that the new school will admit 48 students initially. This number is expected to increase in subsequent years.

Sunner emphasized the importance of retaining medical talent within Surrey. She stated, “The community has waited long enough as students have departed to study medicine elsewhere.” The aim is to cultivate local healthcare professionals who will serve the community effectively.

Community and Economic Growth

The establishment of the SFU School of Medicine is anticipated to contribute significantly to healthcare innovation in the region. The local government envisions a hub that will enhance healthcare delivery for both Surrey residents and the wider British Columbia population.

This new development is poised to alter the landscape of medical education and healthcare in the area, ensuring that future generations of medical students are trained close to home.
