Sam Altman: ChatGPT to Enable Consensual Adult Interactions Soon

OpenAI is set to introduce features allowing explicit adult interactions on ChatGPT for users who verify their age. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, announced this development in a recent social media post. The rollout will start in December 2023 and aims to align with the company’s philosophy of treating adult users responsibly.

Introduction of Age-Gating

The implementation of age-gating is part of OpenAI’s efforts to enhance user experience. Verified adults will gain access to more mature content, including erotica. Altman stated, “As we roll out age-gating more fully, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults.”

Planned ChatGPT Updates

Alongside the mature content, OpenAI is expected to launch a new version of ChatGPT. This version aims to retain the engaging aspects of the previous model, GPT-4o, which many users preferred. After transitioning to GPT-5, feedback indicated that the new model’s interactions felt less personable, prompting OpenAI to reintroduce GPT-4o as an option.

  • Age-Gating Implementation: Expected in December 2023.
  • Mature Content: Access to erotica for verified users.
  • Model Updates: GPT-5 made default; GPT-4o reinstated based on user feedback.

Addressing Mental Health Concerns

In his announcement, Altman acknowledged that previous restrictions were primarily aimed at safeguarding users’ mental health. He indicated that the company is now poised to relax many of these limitations due to new safety tools developed to identify users in distress.

OpenAI has also established a council focused on “well-being and AI.” This group consists of eight researchers examining the effects of AI technology on mental health. However, it has faced criticism for not including suicide prevention experts, a concern voiced by professionals advocating for additional user safeguards.

Looking Ahead

As OpenAI prepares to enable consensual adult interactions soon, it underscores the balance between user freedom and responsible platform usage. The company recognizes that while relaxing restrictions can enhance user experience, it must remain vigilant in protecting those facing mental health challenges.
