Fires Ravage Latter-day Saint Meetinghouses in New Zealand, New Caledonia

Fires have caused significant damage to meetinghouses of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand and New Caledonia. Two separate incidents occurred on the same day, impacting local congregations and prompting investigations.

Fires Ignite in New Zealand and New Caledonia

On Sunday morning, a fire erupted at a chapel in Te Hauke, located in New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay region. Fortunately, firefighters responded promptly and extinguished the flames swiftly. No injuries were reported, but the damage to the building was considerable.

Later that evening, another fire broke out at a church in Mont-Dore, New Caledonia. Similar to the earlier incident, fire crews managed to contain the blaze without reported injuries. However, the chapel also sustained significant damage during the event.

Community Impact and Church Responses

  • Local leaders and members expressed their sadness over the damage to their meetinghouses.
  • Congregations are making alternative arrangements for worship services during this challenging time.
  • Church authorities are collaborating with the local community to support those affected by the fires.

Elder Peter F. Meurs, the Pacific area president of the church, addressed the situation by emphasizing the importance of these meetinghouses. He highlighted that they serve as vital spaces for worship, community service, and spiritual growth for over 600,000 church members across the Pacific.

Recent Trends in Church Fires

The incidents on Sunday marked the third and fourth church fires reported in recent weeks. Previously, a meetinghouse in Australia was destroyed by fire on October 6. Additionally, an alarming event in Michigan occurred on September 28 when a gunman attacked a meetinghouse, resulting in four fatalities before setting the building ablaze.

Investigations are ongoing to determine the causes of these fires. Local church leaders remain committed to providing support to their congregations, ensuring that services continue unaffected despite these unfortunate events.
