Arthur Blank Donates $50M to Atlanta’s Historic Black Colleges via Foundation

The Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has announced a significant donation of $50 million to Atlanta’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). This initiative aims to bridge financial aid gaps that threaten to hinder students from completing their degrees.

Details of the Donation

The donation is designed to provide “gap scholarships” for nearly 10,000 students who are nearing graduation. The scholarships will be available to students in good academic standing who have exhausted all financial aid options.

Supporting Local Institutions

  • Clark Atlanta University
  • Morehouse College
  • Morris Brown College
  • Spelman College

The aim of this initiative is to enhance graduation rates at these institutions. Fay Twersky, president of the foundation, emphasized that these grants represent a significant investment in hope.

Context of the Donation

This ten-year commitment comes shortly after the Trump administration’s decision to redirect nearly $500 million in federal funding toward HBCUs and tribal colleges. However, this funding shift also involves cuts to colleges with high enrollments of Hispanic and other minority students.

Arthur Blank’s Philanthropic Legacy

Arthur Blank, co-founder of The Home Depot, has a net worth exceeding $11 billion. Since his retirement in 2001, he has owned the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United. Blank is committed to philanthropy, pledging to donate at least half of his wealth.

To date, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation has donated over $1.5 billion to various causes including hospitals, schools, and the arts. This recent donation marks the largest contribution to Georgia’s HBCUs, following previous donations such as:

  • $10 million to Spelman College for an innovation lab
  • $6 million for athletic field refurbishments at several institutions

Impact on the Community

Atlanta’s HBCUs collectively generate an annual economic impact of $1 billion and play a crucial role in advancing students from lower-income backgrounds into successful careers. The foundation expressed hope that supporting students can foster a cycle of opportunity benefiting Atlanta communities and beyond.

University leaders have praised the foundation’s efforts. Dr. F. DuBois Bowman, president of Morehouse College, stated that this investment will allow students to focus on their studies, ensuring that their success is based on talent and hard work rather than financial difficulties.
