Brian Branch Suspended One Game for Lions-Chiefs Conduct

Lions safety Brian Branch has received a one-game suspension without pay following his actions during the recent game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The incident occurred after quarterback Patrick Mahomes executed a kneel down, leading Branch to strike receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster in the facemask with an open hand. This altercation sparked a confrontation between both teams.

Details of the Incident

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed regret for Branch’s behavior during the postgame press conference. Branch himself described his actions as “childish” and uncharacteristic of professional conduct.

NFL Response and Suspension

The NFL’s Vice President of Football Operations, Jon Runyan, determined the suspension due to unsportsmanlike conduct. In a letter addressing Branch, Runyan stated:

  • The act was aggressive and unwarranted.
  • It posed a significant risk of injury.
  • It violated the expected standards of conduct for NFL players.
  • Branch’s behavior reflected poorly on the league.

Potential Appeal

Branch has the option to appeal the suspension. Should he choose to do so, his appeal will be reviewed by former players Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson.

Branch’s History of Fines

This suspension is not Branch’s first encounter with disciplinary actions. In the current season alone, he has faced three fines. Additionally, he was fined seven times throughout the previous season in 2024.

Return Eligibility

If the suspension is upheld, Branch will be eligible to return to the roster on Tuesday, October 21. This is after the Lions’ Monday night game against Tampa Bay in Week 7.
