Steelers’ Mike Tomlin Criticizes Browns’ Joe Flacco Trade: ‘Makes No Sense’

Mike Tomlin, the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, recently expressed his surprise over the Cincinnati Bengals’ decision to trade for veteran quarterback Joe Flacco. Flacco, who is making his second start with the Bengals, was acquired from the Cleveland Browns. This intra-division trade has raised eyebrows, particularly in the Steelers’ camp.

Criticism of Flacco Trade

During a media briefing on Monday, Tomlin emphasized his disbelief regarding the trade. He stated, “To be honest, it was shocking to me. (Browns general manager) Andrew Berry must be a lot smarter than me, or us, because it doesn’t make sense to me to trade a quarterback that you think enough of to make your opening day starter to a division opponent that’s hurting in that area.”

Flacco’s Career Overview

  • Drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in 2008
  • Spent 11 seasons with the Ravens
  • Traded to the Denver Broncos before the 2019 season
  • Had two stints with the Cleveland Browns
  • Signed a one-year deal with the Browns in April 2023
  • Started four games for the Browns, throwing two touchdowns and six interceptions

After struggling with the Browns, Flacco was traded to the Bengals, who were in need of a quarterback following Joe Burrow’s toe injury. The Bengals acquired Flacco in exchange for a Day 3 pick swap in the 2026 NFL Draft. He quickly became their starting quarterback.

Flacco’s Performance with the Bengals

In his recent appearance, Flacco threw for 219 yards and two touchdowns, although the Bengals lost to the Packers. Tomlin acknowledged the potential benefit for the Bengals, stating, “He can throw the football, and he’s always been able to throw the football. Arm strength, arm accuracy, anticipatory passer, fluid movement through progressions — that’s always been his game.”

Reactions from Bengals’ Coach

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor responded to Tomlin’s comments, stating his satisfaction with the trade. “I was happy. That’s my only comment,” Taylor said.

Notably, Thursday’s game will mark the 26th meeting between Joe Flacco and Tomlin’s Steelers. Including playoffs, Pittsburgh holds a slight edge in the series with a 13-12 record against Flacco.
