Taliban Claims Retaliatory Border Attacks Killed Pakistani Troops

The Taliban has claimed responsibility for border attacks that resulted in the deaths of Pakistani soldiers. According to a Taliban spokesman, 58 military personnel from Pakistan were killed during these attacks on the northern border. This incident, described as a retaliation, arose following allegations that Pakistan violated Afghan airspace and conducted airstrikes on an Afghan market.
Disputed Casualty Figures
Pakistan disputes the Taliban’s casualty claims. The Pakistani military reports 23 fatalities among its forces. Additionally, they allege that around 200 Taliban fighters were neutralized in the conflict. Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, termed the attacks as “unprovoked,” asserting that Afghan forces targeted civilians.
Response from Officials
- Naqvi warned of strong retaliation, stating, “with a stone for every brick.”
- He condemned the Taliban’s actions as a violation of international law.
- The Afghan Foreign Minister stated there are groups in Pakistan seeking to worsen regional tensions.
In response to the ongoing conflict, both sides reportedly utilized small arms and artillery in the Kunar-Kurram region. Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid noted that in addition to the 58 fatalities, approximately 30 Pakistani soldiers were wounded. Nine Taliban fighters lost their lives with several more injured on their side as well.
Border Crossings Affected
The increased hostility has led to the closure of the two main border crossings, Torkham and Chaman. This closure has left numerous trucks stranded, causing a significant disruption to trade. A spokesperson from the Pakistani military mentioned the necessity of measures to protect lives and properties.
Military Engagements and Accusations
Heavy fighting was reported at multiple locations along the border, including Angoor Adda, Bajaur, and Dir. Reports of intense gunfire began late in the evening from the Afghan side. The Pakistani military has indicated that the situation is serious yet has refrained from public commentary.
The recent escalation aligns with the Taliban’s accusations against Pakistan for bombing civilian areas within Afghan territory. The Pakistani military has long accused the Afghan Taliban of harboring the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which seeks to destabilize the Pakistani government.
International Reactions
This conflict coincided with a significant diplomatic visit to India by Amir Khan Muttaqi, Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister. This trip, marking a thaw in relations, led India to announce the reopening of its embassy in Kabul.
- Saudi Arabia, having recently signed a defense pact with Pakistan, called for restraint.
- Qatar expressed concern over the escalating tensions and urged for peaceful dialogue.
Both nations continue to engage in a complex and volatile interaction, with recent incidents further straining already tense relations.
