Toronto has proudly inaugurated its latest cultural district, dubbed “Little Iran,” in North York. This significant event took place on a Saturday, marking a moment of joy for the Iranian community within the city.
Distinct Celebration
Mayor Olivia Chow, along with Councillor Lily Cheng and Member of Parliament Ali Ehsassi, attended a ceremony at Centre Park. They unveiled the sign for Little Iran, demonstrating their support for the vibrant Persian-Canadian community. Mayor Chow expressed her gratitude, stating, “Today is really a historic day.” The celebration coincided with Thanksgiving weekend, enriching the experience.
Cultural Festivities
The event featured a rich array of activities, including live music, traditional dancing, and a variety of Persian foods and desserts. Attendees enjoyed art shows that showcased the beauty of Iranian culture. Plans are also underway to create a dedicated Persian garden within Centre Park, further enhancing the cultural experience.

- Afkham Mardukhi, president of the Intercultural Iranian Canadian Resource Centre, highlighted the significance of this acknowledgment, noting that it offers a sense of belonging for many.
- Maral Esmaeili from the Iranian Women’s Organization of Ontario shared her sentiment of connection, saying, “It’s the same feeling, the same language, the same culture.”
- Attendee Mahsa Mortazavi expressed her excitement for Little Iran, recalling her longing for a cultural district like Little Italy or Chinatown.
She remarked on the growth and resilience of the Iranian community in Canada, observing how it has become a vital part of the greater society.
Significance of Designation
Sam Fayaz, who runs a Persian grocery store that has served the community for 35 years, echoed similar sentiments. He noted that Farsi speakers already regarded the area as Little Iran, and this official designation fosters greater community recognition.
Fayaz expressed enthusiasm about what this development means for the cultural identity of the community. He stated, “It’s going to bring the community closer and get us a little bit more recognition regarding our culture.”
